This book introduces the pupils gradually to simple
narrative style, using only more productive and common grammatical structures.
1. ONLY ONE LEG
A man killed a crane and gave it to
his servant. The servant roasted it and ate one of its legs. Then he put it on
a plate on the dinner table. The master came and sat down at the dinner table. He
turned the bird upside down and asked, “Where is the other leg?” The servant replied “A crane has only one leg
sir.”
Next morning the master and the servant went together
to the river-bank. A crane was standing there in the water on one leg. The master
clapped his hands and the bird lowered its other leg and flew away.
The master turned to his servant and
said, “Look at that crane! It has two legs”
The servant replied, “that is true,
sir. But you did not clap your hands yesterday and so the crane on the plate
did not lower its other leg.
